Vaal de Gráce Golfing
When Nick Price first visited Vaal de Gráce he was amazed by the beauty and the tranquillity of the natural environment. During his design of the course he managed to keep 7 holes on the river banks, which makes this course very unique. With enough water resources surrounding the course, the maintenance team has no problem in keeping the course in good condition throughout the year. This course is rapidly becoming one of the best courses in South-Africa. The 18 hole layout is forgiving for the average player, but still challenging to the professional who wishes to maintain a good score. Situated on the outskirts of Parys, only a short drive from Johannesburg makes this course very appealing to city dwellers and business folk alike. The rates have been carefully structured, making it possible for both our members and visitors to enjoy a magnificent golfing experience.

Harrismith Golf Club
In the year 1887, Scottish settlers dug a small hole in the earth of the foothills of the the majestic “ben”. They chipped and putted towards this hole. They gave birth to the Harrismith Country Club.
This historical Club is the third oldest Golf Club in South Africa. The heritage has been beautifully preserved by generations of proud members, and today this magnificent 18 hole course and clubhouse is testimony to their tireless efforts.
The classical parkland course, carries a South African Golf Association course rating of 72. A “championship” layout that tests the very best. It’s tree lined fairways meander through undulating terrain. Golfers can easily be distracted by the dramatic beauty of their surroundings. The Club is warm and welcoming, giving visitors a “home from home” reception.
The Club and course has become a regular host of Provincial tournaments, and recently hosted the Free State Open Championship. Ratings and reviews from SA’s top amateurs were highly complementary.
The Harrismith Country Club extends a hand of golfing friendship, to all its guests.

Clarens Golf and Trout Estate
Your round of golf at The Clarens Golf Estate begins at the stylish clubhouse, strategically positioned to view the finish of both nines, as well as the magnificent Mount Horeb (Setlofe). According to Basotho legend, the mountain Setlofe is a shy maiden, betrothed to the warrior Matsa (Rhebokkop) who jilted her for another. This broke Setlofe’s heart and even now, when she thinks about it, she draws her veil around her head and weeps. Thus, when Setlofe is shrouded in cloud, it will soon rain in Clarens.
All of the 18 holes meander along and across the tranquil river and its splendid series of cascades.
The playing surface of the manicured Kikuyu fairways and Bent grass greens are framed by mature Willow and magnificent Lombardi poplar trees, characteristic of the area. This layout is a classic “risk and reward” design. With the fairways wide at the landing areas off the tees, one can easily reach the greens in regulation to your handicap. However, nearly every green hugs the water, so it’s a case of play safe to your handicap, or attack the flags to “go low”.
Great care has been taken to ensure that each round of golf that you play will be as memorable, if not more memorable than the previous one, through attention to detail and beauty.

Heron Banks Golf Course
Successful golf course design is site specific and an astute designer utilises the topography of the site. This implies that the original contours of the site should be used as much as possible to its optimum potential avoiding “fighting” the contours. One of my main design principles is to look at the natural drainage of the site, which to a large extent will determine the type of golf course I envisage. The Vaal River runs along the northern boundary of the site at Heron Banks. Immediate to the south side of the Vaal River were natural wetlands (in some areas up to 150 meters wide) created over many years of the river flooding its banks. In contrast to the latter, the southern side of the terrain was distinctly different and more like a typical Highveld terrain. It was clear that year and years of rain had moulded the site to create it into quite a contrast. Further it was clear that at some point in time the flooding of the Vaal River along the northern side of the site became controlled this is evident from the natural Highveld vegetation re- establishing itself immediately adjacent to the river.
With the above in mind the philosophy was to keep these “natural” features intact and to design nine holes within the wetlands area and the other nine holes on the more typical Highveld vegetative area. To keep a central theme many wetlands areas were incorporated in the southern side (more Highveld conditions like), in particular those areas where the summer floods from outside the property had an impact on the storm water movement is area, which wasn’t evident on site.
The inward nine holes as well as the outward nine were designed so that the flow of the holes displayed a typical clock-wise and anti-clockwise flow optimising wind and weather conditions placing a premium on a variety of shot values for the course. The unique bunkering style of the Designer was incorporated into the course to optimise course management and a variety of options when playing the golf course.
Situated just 45 minutes from Johannesburg, Heron Banks River and Golf Estate invites you to discover the freedom of 3km river frontage on the Free State bank of the Vaal River. Surrounded by beautiful natural parklands, Heron Banks offers an exclusive safe haven for corporate executives, young families or retired couples alike. Enjoy an outdoor lifestyle at its best, with top facilities that include an 18-hole Danie Obermeyer – designed golf course, boating centre, walking trails, spectacular views and so much more.

Schoeman Park Golf Club
Golf has been played in Bloemfontein for a lot longer than some might realise, and long before the post-World War I golf
boom took place, there was a fanatical group of golfing diehards playing their beloved game in the Free State’s
capital city.
As in other major centres, the Victorian courses were modest affairs, carved out of virgin bush (or in the case of Bloem,
stark savanna veld). Rather curiously, as the game became evermore popular in Bloemfontein, two very fine 18-hole layouts came
into being – right next to each other.
At full stretch, the layout measures a little over 6 500 metres, which considering Bloemfontein’s altitude of 1 370 metres above sea level, is certainly short by modern standards. But judging by the popularity of this vibrant club, not many golfers care, and in fact many visitors probably relish the prospect of making scores that might flatter their ability. Some might decide to overpower this seemingly benign layout, only to find their ball clattering into the giant bluegums that line the fairways, and suddenly the course will not seem that easy. For the better players to really attack this course, they should be able to work the ball both ways from the tees.
